Being Prepared...

I will definitely take half of the responsibility of what occurred in my classroom today. The students are taking the TABE each morning, and several of the students are also taking work assessments- needless to say, they are exhausted. We all know how testing makes our struggling students feel. I had not gotten to changing the Daily Kickoff and Journal Entry for my 4rth block today, and that was enough to set the tone of the class it seemed. I never realized how having that "Beginning" routine to my class truly helped the structure...
So, they didn't have a Journal entry today, and the main part of my lesson was actually going to be a presentation from a student who is of the 12th grade level. (I have a mixed level class). She had prepared several advanced organizers for part of her assignments, and was reading examples of pastoral poems. The plan was to have her present the Advance Organizers to the class, and give a lesson on pastoral poems. She wasn't prepared because of being absent the day before... I started a lesson on reviewing prepositions, and it was insane. I had one student bouncing off the walls, one student who was grumbling, but doing the work and trying to pay attention, and one student who pretty much just talked, or sat in silence. I got as far as I could, but realized that they were a mixture of being maxed out, and just not able or wanting to do the work. I eventually was able to get them to play a game of Boggle with me...
But eeeeehhh.. it was horrible. I need to be better prepared, and have better classroom management!
